OUR MISSION

Provide FREE Literacy Resources to Adults in Need

About Us

Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County was founded in 1984 as a community response to local literacy needs.

  • We provide tutoring for reading, writing, math, personal health literacy, financial literacy, citizenship, and computer use in one-to-one and small group settings.
  • We were granted 501(c) 3 status in February, 2004.
  • We are staffed by a Program Coordinator/Customer Service Specialist.
  • We have a volunteer Advisory Council of community members.

What Drives Us?

  • 25% of New Mexican adults lack a high school diploma or GED.
  • 50% of adults in Doña Ana County read at or below Literacy Level 2.

As a benchmark in practical terms, nearly two-thirds (64%) of all jobs today require literacy skills beyond level 2, while only 12% require skills at level 1 and 24% at level 2, according to a study by the Milken Institute.
